KAY W. COULSON

Kay is the Founder and Executive Director of n-ACTION Family Network which was incorporated as a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization in 2004.  She was born in Florence, South Carolina but raised in Hampton, Virginia.  In 1975, she relocated to California with her young daughter and son at that time.  In 1978, she married her husband of now 31 years, Rev. Thomas C. Coulson Jr.   She’s the mother of four (Felicia, Charles, Jamila, and Aisha) and grandmother of seven grand-daughters: ages 8 months - 21 years old.

 

Ms. Coulson’s educational achievements include: Associate of Arts degree in Administration of Justice at Long Beach City College, Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, and Masters in Public Administration from California State University of Long Beach.

 

She began her career in Corrections in 1981 as a Counselor at Hoffman House and House of Sarah (both halfway house programs for female offenders).  Ms. Coulson later entered her career with the Bureau of Prisons on October 17, 1982 at FCI, Terminal Island.  

After 21 ½ years of excellence service, she retired on January 2, 2004.  She held various positions such as:   Correctional Officer, Case Manager, Unit Manager, and Volunteer Coordinator.  As Volunteer Coordinator, Ms. Coulson received a National Award for Excellence in Citizen, Participation, Community Partnerships, and Volunteerism.
She also received a Certificate of Accomplishment in the Who’s Who Historical Society in May 2001 and two Award Commendations from Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke for dedicated service to the affairs of the community in 2000 and 2001.   

 

Ms. Coulson holds membership in several national organizations:  American Correctional Association (ACA) for more than 15 years, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice (NABCJ) for over 15 years. She is also a member of the National Alliance of Faith and Justice, an affiliate of the (NABCJ), and currently partner with MEV Free Legal Clinic.

She is a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Yorba Linda, California and serves on the Usher Board (Doorkeepers I) and the Greeters’ Ministry. She also serves as a volunteer for the Los Angeles Sheriff Department and currently holds the position of Corresponding Secretary of the Century Clergy Council.
